An open proposal to the WCA

Give the octahedron its name.

FTO Octaminx

Four of the five Platonic puzzles already have a real name. The octahedron still answers to a part number. Let's fix that before 2027.

The problem

A name, not a spec sheet.

“FTO” is a description, not an identity. It stuck because nothing better was offered.

It isn't a word

The dodecahedron is the Megaminx. The octahedron got three capital letters.

You can't say it

You spell F-T-O. A caller can't shout it; a beginner can't google it.

It's already taken

Search FTO and you get a football club, a finance term, a car engine.

The family

The minx dynasty has an empty seat.

The great twisty puzzles are named for their Platonic solids, and share one surname: -minx. Only the octahedron sits there without a name.

Four of five already wear a name.

The name

It's already in the room.

Octaminx
Octa- · ὀκτώ

Greek for eight — one per face.

-minx · the surname

Shared with the Pyraminx and Megaminx.

Sayable

Two syllables. Say it, don't spell it.

Searchable

One word, one puzzle.

Family-true

Reads as a minx on sight.

Objections, answered

Yes, we've heard them.

01

“There's already an Octaminx.”

A rare Tony Fisher collector's mod. Reportedly, he welcomes the name moving to the puzzle everyone actually solves.

02

“FTO has already stuck.”

So did “Rubik's Revenge,” before the world settled on 4×4. Placeholders hold only until a better name is offered.

03

“It's just a label.”

It headlines scoreboards and world records for decades. Worth choosing once, well.

Why now

The window won't stay open.

2014

The last new name

Skewb — the last event the WCA named. Then silence.

June 2026

FTO voted in

Official at last — the first new event in twelve years.

Jan 2, 2027

Set in stone

First competitions. Whatever it's called goes on the record — permanently.

Write “Octaminx” before the record book writes “FTO” for you.

Back the name

Name the eighth solid.
